Child Advocates

Since 1989, Thetas have stood with the National Court Appointed Special Advocates/Guardians ad Litem (CASA/GAL) Association for Children. Kappa Alpha Theta has contributed millions of dollars and countless volunteer hours to CASA/GAL programs and impacted the lives of many, many foster children.

On any given day in Houston, there are more than 2,000 kids in foster care. Child Advocates trains people to advocate for the best interests of these children – who have been removed from their homes because of life-threatening abuse or neglect – so they can find safe, permanent homes as quickly as possible. These court-appointed volunteers serve as the judge’s eyes and ears while the children are in custody, ensuring their unique needs are met until they can safely return home or are permanently placed with a loving relative or adoptive family.

Unlike caseworkers and attorneys – who juggle overwhelming caseloads – Child Advocates volunteers represent just one child or sibling group at a time. Studies show children served by an advocate volunteer are better able to work with others and to control behavior; their parents are more likely to complete counseling services, psychiatric evaluations, and drug and alcohol counseling than parents of children without an advocate. With Child Advocates’ help, the cycle of abuse can be broken, helping these children to one day become productive adults and loving parents.

Houston Thetas have served as advocates, raised funds to support Child Advocates’ aim to provide a court appointed advocate volunteer for every abused and neglected child in Harris County who needs one, and attended and volunteered for the Angels of Hope Luncheon, Childspree, the Superhero Run, and the Santa's Wish List program.
